Sinfonia Toronto Concert - Con Amore March 7, 2008

Sinfonia Toronto will present a Masterpiece Series concert on Friday, March 7 at 8 pm at Grace Church on-the-Hill (300 Lonsdale Road). Titled ‘Con Amore’ the concert will feature the internationally renowned Italian conductor Paolo Ponziano Ciardi.

The soaring melodies of Mendelssohn’ Sinfonia No. 12 and Verdi’s Sinfonia for Strings will be heard, along with Little Suite on Canadian Folk Songs, by Canadian composer Harry Somers. The concert will begin with a sparkling Mozart Divertimento.
Paolo Ponziano Ciardi was born in Genova and began his conducting career at an early age. He studied at the Mozarteum in Salzburg under Milan Horvat and at the Accademia Chigiana in Siena under Franco Ferrara. In 1981 he was the only Italian to win a scholarship offered by the Austrian Government to continue his studies at the Hochschule für Musik in Vienna with Otmar Suitner. He won the 1978 edition of the "European Personality Award" for his work.
As a conductor Maestro Ciardi is a regular guest conductor with the RAI Orchestra in Turin, Teatro Verdi in Trieste, the Opera Society "G.P. da Palestrina" in Cagliari, Teatro Rossini in Pesaro, the Orchestra "A. Scarlatti" of Naples, the Opera Theatre “V. Bellini” of Catania, the Opera Theatre of Budapest, the Opera Theatre of Spalato (Croatia), the Filarmonia of Minsk and the Budapest Chamber Orchestra; the National Orchestra of Malta and the Budapest Concert Orchestra.
He has recorded for RAI 1 and 3, the Vatican Radio, the Magiara Radio & Television, the Bielorussia Radio & Television, the Mexican Radio & Television, the Fox Television and for the recording companies ABC, Agorà and Phoenix Classics.
There will be a free post-concert reception, giving audience members a chance to meet the orchestra members, conductor and soloist.
