The history of Simon Finn is pretty much the definitive authentic "lost folk" story - from playing the Marquee club with Al Stewart back in the late 60's, to releasing a lone LP in 1970 ("Pass The Distance") which became one of the rarest, most sought after psych/folk albums of all time, before disappearing over to Canada where he spent his time organic farming and being a postman among other occupations...
He was "rediscovered" nearly three decades later by Current 93's David Tibet who re-released "Pass The Distance" on his Durtro imprint, creating a wave of interest that resulted in shows with the likes of Thurston Moore, Anthony And The Johnsons and Graham Coxon, and much critical acclaim.
In 2005 he released his second album "Magic Moments" (a mere 35 years after he recorded it !), and has since
spent his time touring and recording, recently moving back to the UK.
His live shows retain all the elements that made his early work so compelling - musically somewhere between Tyrannosaurus Rex and Roy Harper but with an often intense, almost gothic, atmosphere. The showstopping "Jerusalem" demands to be witnessed live - worth the price of admission alone. For this show he is joined by notable associates Joolie Wood (Sun Dial/Current 93) and Karl Blake (The Lemon Kittens/Current 93/ Alternative TV)...
Support this evening comes in the shape of two of Brighton's most enigmatic solo performers.
With a background in experimental electronica and film, multi-instrumentalist and composer Elizabeth Walling is also lead vocalist for post-punk avant-garde classical 6-piece A Scandal in Bohemia. Her music takes inspiration from the dark comedy and melancholy of Elizabethan song texts, converting them in to new settings which traverse folk, electronica and post-rock.
Birdengine is the guise Lawry Joseph Tilbury chooses to make music under. Lawry's voice nestles high in the whispering trees with a dark and creepy charm - from a childhood venturing in to the forests of the Dorset countryside with a nylon guitar and a broken tape player, playing ramshackle, melancholy melodies to himself, Birdengine has since migrated to Brighton but has managed to retain the eerie yet pastoral sound that infiltrates his music.
