Namu Yang is from the matrilineal Moso ethnic group. She left her village on the shores of Lugu Lake to attend the Shanghai Conservatory and later became a professional singer, top model, and a prolific author. She tells her remarkable story in Leaving Mother Lake: A Girlhood at the Edge of the World. Her latest book is Being Born Beautiful is not the Same as Being Beautiful.
