Robert Rauschenberg, who came to prominence in the 1950s, was one of the great American artists. As a painter, sculptor, and printmaker, he drew his subject matter from the everyday world. In the style of collage, he juxtaposed and overlapped actual objects and fragments derived from photographs, newspaper clippings, and magazines-often bound together by the artist's gestural brushwork-to create kaleidoscopic works of art.
