Shotgun Wedding Quintet August 19, 2011

While the name Shotgun Wedding implies a forced marriage, the San Francisco-based band makes the wedding of rap to a jazzy, horn-infused band seem like a natural combination. The outfit is a feisty offshoot of the larger Jazz Mafia, which performs in concert the following night in the park. The emphasis is on far-reaching original music with a rhythmic undertow that will drag you to the dance floor. Don’t let the size of the band fool you: they sound like there are twice as many pieces up there.
