Sherway Gardens' Gallery in the Garden: Fourteen June 15, 2012

Fourteen, Sherway Gardens’ current Gallery in the Garden exhibit is a selection of works in oil, acrylic, pastel, collage, mixed media, watercolour monoprinting and lithography that features Toronto based artists Toni Caldarone, Kathleen Haushalter, Edna Hildebrandt, Bill Ireland, Marcela Maciel, Debra MacMillan, John Ming Mark, Helen McCusker, Paul McCusker, Cheryl Mount, Camille Muller, Brian Pelley, Marilyn Pike and Eva Roosman Eccles. Toronto artist, Toni Caldarone considers herself an explorative artist and uses a variety of recycled, standard and mixed media. She encourages her students - children and adults alike - to explore and experiment as they step into their own creative zone. Toni’s art classes are currently available through Neilson Park Creative Centre, TDSB’s Learn4Life Program, Haliburton School of The Arts and through private functions. Her artwork can be found at Neilson Park Creative Centre’s annual Winter ArtFest and Art In The Park along with various art shows and private collections. Toni endeavors to practice her mission statement: “To nurture creativity through positive energies.”

Kathleen Haushalter is a painter from Etobicoke and a graduate of York University. She did post graduate studies at University of Toronto and has studied and worked at her art for over thirty years. Kathleen has exhibited in invitational and juried shows across southern Ontario. Her work has been recognized with a number of awards and her paintings are included in private collections in Canada and beyond. Kathleen is currently serving as President of The Etobicoke Art Group and President of Neilson Park Creative Centre, where she is an active volunteer.

Etobicoke resident Edna Hildebrandt, a retired registered nurse, was born in Vigan, Ilocos Sur, Philippines. Edna studied art at Central Technological College of Toronto and Humber College. Otherwise, she is mostly self-taught and has enjoyed using references from art books to develop her skills. Since joining the Etobicoke Art Group at Neilson Park Creative Center, Edna enjoys painting in the Wednesday Open studio, sharing ideas and developing her own style.

Etobicoke painter and illustrator, Bill Ireland graduated from the Ontario College of Art in 1969 in Drawing and Painting. He worked at the McLaughlin Planetarium of the Royal Ontario Museum as a scientific illustrator for over 26 years. Bill now works primarily in oils, acrylics, and watercolours. He is currently an active member of Humber Valley Art Club, The Etobicoke Art Group and Neilson Park Creative Centre.

Marcela Maciel was born in Mexico City and now lives in Mississauga. First studying oils, watercolours and pastels with various Mexican artists until she was 18 years old, she later studied sculpture, figure drawing, photography and enamel. After graduating as an architect with a minor in art from the Iberoamericana University in Mexico City, she taught technical drafting, design principles and art to university and high school students, while working as an architect. With the support of a scholarship awarded by the Japanese government she attended a postgraduate program in the education department of the Tsukuba University, Ibaraki, Japan. She moved to Toronto 15 years ago where she has been working as a senior structural designer doing computer 3D models. Marcela is also a member of the Etobicoke Art Group and Neilson Park Creative Centre.
Port Credit’s Debra MacMillan graduated from Sheridan College’s Illustration program in 1990 after majoring in book illustration with a minor in advertising. Currently an office manager and executive assistant, she has recently rediscovered her love of drawing and painting in her own time. Debra has also discovered the enjoyment of participating in events where proceeds from the sale of her artwork go towards charities and programs in need of funding.

Self-educated Etobicoke artist John Ming Mark has a BA Sc from the University of Toronto and is a painter and a multi-media creator. John was born in Hong Kong in 1952 – the year of the Dragon – and attended Parkdale Public School, then Western Tech and is a member of Neilson Park Creative Centre, The Etobicoke Art Group and the EAG Printmakers.

Mississauga art instructor Helen McCusker teaches for Neilson Park Creative Centre and Visual Arts Mississauga. She is a member of Neilson Park Creative Centre, the Etobicoke Art Group and VAM. Helen's work focuses on portrait painting, figure drawing, paper sculpture and paper pop-ups and she exhibits frequently in member's shows. She is a partner with her husband in Eaglewood Studios- a business that provides Illustration and Graphic Design services.

Paul McCusker is an illustrator and cartoonist from Mississauga. He graduated from both the Illustration and Media Arts Cartooning programs at Sheridan College. Paul was a freelance cartoonist/illustrator since 1976, first as a local cartoonist for the Guelph Life Newspaper and later for the Globe and Mail and the Toronto Star. He has worked in educational publishing and illustrated several children’s and young adult’s books. Paul was the artist on Owl Magazine’s “Mighty-Mites” comic strip (written by Harold Eastman) from 1993 until 2000. Paul’s personal projects include the Spudniks, Rodent Noir, as well as painting and figure drawing.

Oakville artist Cheryl Mount is a graduate of Concordia University, Fine Arts, the University of Toronto with a BA Ed, Interior design at BCIT and Sheridan College, printmaking at McGill, photography at the Emily Carr College of Art, and painting at the Dundas Valley School of Art, the Oakville Art Society, the Etobicoke Art Group, Neilson Park Creative Centre, Haliburton School of the Arts, and attended a residency at the International School of Drawing, Painting and Sculpture in Italy. Mount’s journey began with representing images in a perceptual manner. It is now following a transitional path to painting conceptually while utilizing the landscape in a more contemporary way. The paintings have become an intuitive reaction to shapes and lines incorporating a poetic and musical reference.

Toronto’s Camille Muller is internationally known as an artist and art teacher in various media. She travels extensively to teach - and to continually study art in all media – with artists who are known internationally. She has exhibited her art, taught and demonstrated art techniques in Italy, Norway, Switzerland and from coast to coast - in Canada and the United States. Her art education is extensive - including fine art at the University of Windsor - and with acclaimed artists in watercolour, acrylics, collage and mixed media. Her art techniques have been published in eight countries and included in personal and corporate collections. Camille has won numerous art awards in Canada and abroad, including third place in the Central Ontario Art Association "Cross Section" juried show at the Etobicoke Civic Centre.

Brian Pelley is a retired Etobicoke IT specialist who now enjoys painting in oils and watercolours. Brian has been a member of the Franklin Carmichael Art Group in Rexdale and is a past member of the The Etobicoke Art Group.

Toronto painter Marilyn Pike gets her inspiration for her paintings from the old houses and gardens in her neighbourhood of Parkdale. Marilyn is an active member of the Etobicoke Art Group and Neilson Park Creative Centre.

Kleinburg artist Eva Roosman was born in Estonia and educated in Sweden. She has been drawing since childhood and has 20 years of self taught painting experience. She now paints in acrylics and oils, and has studied in classes at the Toronto School of Art and Neilson Park Creative Centre. Eva was brought up in a family of artists. When she decided to give it a try, she found out that she loved painting.
