In 1939, Walter Mills, an educator at Parole Elementary School in Annapolis, MD, fought for African American teachers in Anne Arundel County to receive the same pay rate as white teachers. The court case was successfully argued by attorney and Maryland native Thurgood Marshall and brought an end to unequal pay for teachers in Anne Arundel County, and eventually the entire state of Maryland. This exhibition will include rarely seen photos, objects, and documents in the process of telling the life story of Walter Mills.
