Shantata Court Chalu Aahe - Film (1971 / B&W). Co-produced by Satyadev Dubey and Govind Nihalani, this film set off Marathi cinema's New Wave. Written in 1963 and first staged in '67 by the theatre collective Rangayan, it is a satire on middle-class society's hypocrisy. The film-within-a film has a travelling amateur theatre group make an unscheduled stop at a village where a mock trial is conducted of fellow member, Miss Benare, who is a victim of sexual exploitation. When she is 'charged' with having an abortion and the attacks grow vicious, she speaks, showing men for what they are. The film features several members of the Rangayan cast, including Sulabha Deshpande, in the central role of Leela Benare, Arvind Deshpande, Eknath Hattangadi, Amol Palekar and Amrish Puri. After the screening, there will be an interaction with the original creative team of the film. Amrit Gangar is a Mumbai-based author, curator and short filmmaker who had put together a seven-part interactive series, Saat Sarjak Saat Samvaad, hosted by the NCPA in 2008. He has curated several retrospectives for the Mumbai International Film Festival for Documentary, Short & Animation Films and served on numerous national and international festival juries. In 2006, he presented a curatorial programme at the Tate Modern, London, based on his concept of the Cinema of Prayoga.
