The Shanghai Chinese Orchestra, led by Wang Fujian, became China’s first large-scale modern ensemble of traditional instruments when it was formed in 1952. The orchestra, which has performed throughout its homeland and in more than thirty countries, brings its twenty-piece chamber ensemble to Penn State. Luo Xiaoci, zheng (long zither); Qian Jun, dizi (transverse flute); Duan Aiai, erhu (bowed two-string fiddle); and the Seven Fairies Ensemble, erhu, dizi, yangqin (hammered dulcimer), guzheng (plucked zither), zhongruan (four-stringed, round sound box plucked instrument), and pipa (four-stringed, pear-shaped plucked instrument) are the featured soloists in a program of music from the orchestra’s Elegant Music Series. The concert includes the works Relic, Drum Fantasia, In the Still of the Night, Moon’s Reflection on Er-Quan, Sword Dance, Like a Dream, The Rainbow Skirt and the Feathered Coat, Jijiruling, and Moonlight on the Spring River.
