Much-loved Australian crime-writer (and director of the Brunswick Institute) Shane Maloney introduces a personal favourite: Death in Brunswick.

Nominated for five AFI Awards including Best Director and Best Film, John Ruane's odd-ball first feature is peopled with an engaging array of eccentric characters.

A cook in a seedy Brunswick nightclub, Carl (Sam Neill) has a mild, shiftless approach to life and a dominating mother. Simultaneously becoming involved with the death of Mustafa (the drug-dealing Turkish kitchen-hand), and falling in love with the barmaid, Sophie (played by Zoe Carides with zesty charm), he suddenly finds himself embroiled in murder and mayhem.

Flashing with satirical comedy and steeped in a pleasing black humour, Death in Brunswick remains both fresh and highly engaging.

ACMI is proud to be collaborating with the Australian Film Institute to program the first in a series of special events.
