Virtuoso mandolin player Chris Thile, of the popular bluegrass band Nickel Creek (and more recently the Punch Brothers), joins with equally talented double-bass player Edgar Meyer for an evening of works the two have composed together, as well as arrangements of pieces by J.S. Bach.

This special concert is presented by San Francisco Performances.

At 27, Thile is one of the most inventive musicians of his generation, having completely changed perceptions of the mandolin and created a new level of excellence in bluegrass music.

Grammy Award-winning double-bassist Meyer has been the recipient of a MacArthur "Genius" Award, and is the consummate crossover artist, equally adept at classical and bluegrass music. He has collaborated with everyone from cellist Yo-Yo Ma to Indian tabla master Zakir Hussain.

This all-instrumental concert includes compositions by the pair featured on a new CD and companion DVD, recently released by Nonesuch Records, as well as an arrangement of Bach's F Sharp Prelude from "Book 2 of the Well-Tempered Clavier." But expect to see some inspired improvisation as well.

$49/$32.
