One of the most exciting and acclaimed groups on the jazz scene, the SFJAZZ Collective embodies the message that jazz is an exciting, living, ever-changing, and ever-relevant art form. The 2010 Collective roster marks the debuts of Mark Turner (tenor saxophone), Avishai Cohen (trumpet) and Edward Simon (piano); the return of Stefon Harris (vibraphone); and continuing members Miguel Zenón (alto saxophone), Robin Eubanks (trombone), Matt Penman (bass), and Eric Harland (drums). Each year The SFJazz Collective focuses on one jazz master by arranging famous compositions to its complement of instruments, delving deeply into their muse and adding to the body of work with original compositions inspired by their rich history. This season, the Collective puts its focus on Horace Silver of the Jazz Messengers (founded by Art Blakey). Silver's work with the Messengers and his Blue Note Records of the 50s and 60s introduced Latin, gospel and soul as influences into the art form and redefined what jazz was from then on.
