Senator Mike Gravel will speak about the overwhelming attrition of the American middle classes, and discuss the causes and possible remedies for this erosion.

During twelve years as a Democratic senator representing Alaska, from 1969 until 1981, Gravel became famous for reading the Pentagon Papers into the Congressional Record. He ran for president and vice president on the Democratic ticket, switched to the Libertarian party to make a run for president and to promote the National Initiative, which calls for a constitutional amendment allowing for ballot initiatives at the federal level.

Never shy of contentious issues, he opposed the draft during the Vietnam war and nuclear weapons testing in Alaska, worked to stop the building of nuclear reactors, and was an early proponent of normalized relations with China. Recently he has come out in support of WikiLeaks.
