A collection of Southern art must include the work of self-taught, outsider and visionary artists. While self-taught artists have worked in the South throughout its history, their work has garnered much attention in the past fifty years, due in part to an increased understanding and recognition that this type of art is as valid a mode of visual expression as fine art from academically trained artists. The Morris Museum holds a strong collection of work by contemporary Southern self-taught artists.
