The 2005 REAL ID Act was passed due to recommendations by the 9/11 Commission that Congress enhance the security standards for driver’s licenses. The legislation put forward new requirements to make identification cards harder to duplicate in an effort to prevent identity theft and fraud and to keep Americans safer from acts of terrorism. For the past several years the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, in cooperation with the states, has begun implementing this legislation. However, members of Congress are now considering the PASS ID Act, which would overturn several substantive provisions of REAL ID. Join us as our panelists speak to the new legislation and the impact it would have on our safety, security, and privacy.
