On a peach farm in South Carolina, in the heart of the Civil Rights Movement, young white Lily Owens searches for the truth about her mother's life and death. She befriends the defiant and fierce-hearted black housekeeper Rosaleen, her "stand in" mother. When Rosaleen is jailed, Lily finds a way to free her and, together, they flee to the town of Tiburon, a name she found among her mother's few possessions. They wind up living in a household alive with the energy of three strong, black, bee-keeping women and the life-sized Black Madonna who presides over the parlor. Exploring themes of maternal loss and betrayal, guilt and forgiveness, and a young woman's independence, Lily discovers the real meaning of family. From the novel by Sue Monk Kidd.
