Scion Presents: To The Masses August 25, 2007

Scion and Giant Robot magazine present To The Masses, the latest art show at Scion’s 4,500 square foot Installation L.A. Gallery. The exhibition incorporates various themes in contemporary art and popular culture that can be found in Giant Robot magazine, stores, and art gallery.

Artists from the U.S. include Caroline Hwang, Ben Woodward, feric, Dan-ah Kim, and Brian Ralph; from Japan: Eishi Takaoka and Kohei Yamashita; from Spain: Olaf Ladousse; from England: French (yes, that's his name). Together this diverse group of artists delves into different mediums (including silk screen printing, carved wood, simple pen-and-ink drawings) and styles. Yet they share an indie spirit, and are part of an underground cultural movement that spans the globe. Most can't boast that they've shown in museums or have had a huge career in art thus far, but they have made a range of work and products that stem from their art, such as Ladousse's comics and zines, Yamashita's many character-derived products, Ralph's screen-printed concert posters, and Hwang's handmade purses. Not afraid to do the traditionally non-artist "thing" of blending art with products, many of the artists are known across different mediums and by a huge cross-section of people, giving them a wide reach and appealing "to the masses." This art exhibition will feature their fine art which, for most of these artists, is their primary focus.

Curating this exhibition is the publisher/co-editor and owner, Eric Nakamura who curates most of the 36 exhibitions Giant Robot presents annually in the three cities.

The opening reception takes place August 25th, 7pm – 10pm and will run through September 8th at the Scion Installation LA Gallery, 3521 Helms Ave. (at National), Culver City, CA 90232.
