Arnolphe has seen so many of his friends made cuckolds by the women in their lives that he devises a plan to avoid this fate in himself. After raising the young Agnes in a convent and appointing two bumbling, dim-witted servants to guard her, he finally feels his plan is working. But then Agnes does the unthinkable; Arnolphe has kept her too ignorant to understand she isn't supposed to fall in love with someone else.
