Scarborough is hosting the largest event planned for the North Yorkshire region in partnership with Scarborough Borough Council, the South Bay Traders Association, Heroes Welcome scheme and Captain Viney of the 2nd Battalion, Yorkshire Regiment (Green Howards). Scarborough's West Pier will be transformed into a military patrol base named 'Patrol Base Fishbone', complete with L118 (105mm) light guns and a Lynx Attack helicopter. The 'Ravens' parachute display team is also expected to make an appearance when they 'drop-in' onto the South Bay beach. A formal presentation will kick-start the event at the Patrol Base where veterans will be officially presented with their Veterans Badges. Throughout the afternoon various activities are planned including a Tug of War competition and an abseil from the lighthouse. Visitors will be able to have a go on climbing towers, paintball range and create their own ID badges. Armed Forces equipment and weapons will be exhibited together with various military vehicles, a vintage air raid shelter and a fully operational field hospital. There will also be Armed Forces personnel from the Royal Navy, Army, and the Royal Air Force stationed at information points about serving in the armed forces. The Band of Scots Guards and the Yorkshire Volunteers Band will be marching down the Foreshore. One of Scarborough's largest parades to date is planned to close the day's celebrations at 4.30pm, followed by a service of thanks at Scarborough's Lifeboat House. The event is free and open to everyone despite their age. For parking follow the signs to the two Park and Ride sites located on A64 Seamer Road, Scarborough and on A165 Filey Road, Scarborough. Scarborough is home to 'Heroes Welcome', an initiative which supports Armed Forces personnel by giving discounts, service upgrades or special acknowledge - for more information please visit www.heroeswelcome.co.uk
