SBS YOUTH ORCHESTRA will be presenting a concert titled FAREWELL CONCERT- FANTASTIC FLIGHTS on Sunday 21 August at 3.00pm at Riverside Theatres, Parramatta. Join us to celebrate 20 years of support for young Australian musicians and farewell the orchestra before it travels to Germany (Munich, Bayreuth, Weimar, Leipzig and Dresden) and the Czech Republic (Carlsbad and Prague).

This bon voyage concert features Brahms’ Variations on a Theme by Haydn Op 56a, Schubert’s Symphony No. 4 and Kodaly’s Dances from Galanta. The SBS Radio & Television Youth Orchestra was formed in 1988 by Russian-born conductor Matthew Krel with the help of the Special Broadcasting Service. Since then they have performed in more than 35 countries and have filmed more than 70 documentaries on music, some of which have screened in Australia.

“Tours broaden the intellectual and technical skills of our young players,” says Matthew Krel. “They also help our best players make judgements about applying for professional positions in European Orchestras. Several former SBSYO members now have positions with prestigious international orchestras”.

One of its unique aims is to give young musicians experience in performing for national broadcast on television and radio. Since its formation, the SBS Youth Orchestra has organised a large number of international tours. They have performed in countries as remote and exotic as Austria, China, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Japan, Malta, New Caledonia, Russia, Slovakia, Spain, Taiwan, and Tonga.

In September 2008 the SBS Youth Orchestra will travel to Europe once more, in particular to experience the homeland, Germany, of some of history’s most famous composers - Bach, Mendelssohn and Wagner. The group will perform and record while on tour and expects to produce television programs for transmission later on SBS Television.
