DIRECTIONS IN SOUND: Notes from the Asian American Underground
a musical showcase of the SF Intl. Asian American Film Festival

8pm doors/9pm show, 21+, $10
Tickets at www.asianamericanmedia.org

Come ride the wave of the best indie and crazily creative bands either side of the Mississippi at this annual musical showcase hosted by the SF Intl. Asian American Film Festival. San Franciscos beloved songster (and recent YouTube sensation) GOH NAKAMURA kicks off the evening, full band in tow, with his whimsical and witty pop tunes. THE OLD FASHIONED WAY follows with their multi-instrumental orchestral indie pop--tuneful, intricate and with a snap to get your feet moving. And finally, dance, dance, dance into the night to the electro new wave madness that is identical twins MING & PING as they deliver synthed-out bliss. DJ CHAN CHAN on the ones and twos between sets!

These Hong Kong-born identical twins make danceable New Wave inspired Electro-pop, and are infamous for their rare and extravagant multimedia live shows that include abundant costumes, theatrics, video, and supporting performers. "There's some powerful and moving stuff on Mingping.com that unites '80s new wave with timeless synthpop. In fact, it'll fit nicely between your Tubeway Army LPs and Add N to X CDs." -- Splendid zine

A swarm of multi-talented musicians and a dazzling array of weird instruments erupt from the stage when the seven members of The Old-Fashioned Way strike their first note. Having been compared to both The Arcade Fire and Architecture in Helsinki, this SF-based indie rock outfit shifts easily between layered synth-pop and melancholic, guitar-driven dance rock. "Like the Magnetic Fields with a more impressive back-up band." -- Noise Pop Program Guide

Goh Nakamura is a SF Bay Area based musician who likes to write ditties about parking tickets, impossible crushes and faraway dreamlands (amongst other things). Accompanying himself with digital samplers and an acoustic guitar, his live shows are always unique and often unpredictable.
