Coming off its successful Cuban tour and selection as the first-ever U.S. finalist in Britain's BBC choral competition "Let the Peoples Sing," the five-time Grammy Award-winning San Francisco Girls opens its 33rd annual concert season with "Rural Inspirations." Joined by guest artist Kitka Women's Vocal Ensemble-one of the world's leading interpreters of Eastern European music and beyond-the Girls Chorus will present music inspired by world folk traditions. Two performances, November 4 at 8 pm in San Francisco and November 6 at 7:30 pm in Berkeley, will feature music by Kodaly, Bartok, Mellnas, Tormis and other Eastern European composers. For more than thirty years, the thrilling sounds of the extraordinarily gifted young women of the San Francisco Girls Chorus have captured the attention and fired the imaginations of audiences worldwide. Following a phenomenal 30th anniversary season that included featured performances at the Inauguration of President Barack Obama, a New York debut at Lincoln Center and unprecedented ticket sales, the San Francisco Girls Chorus has furthered its status as an internationally celebrated professional choral ensemble. In 2010, the ensemble won its fourth and fifth Grammy(R) Awards for Mahler's Eighth Symphony with Michael Tilson Thomas and the San Francisco Symphony.
