SAMPRADAYA Dance Creations, acclaimed for its innovative dance productions under the artistic direction of Lata Pada, launches a unique and unprecedented inter-cultural artistic project with the premiere of SAMVĀD on October 23 & 24 as part of Harbourfront Centre’s Next Steps series at the Enwave Theatre.

SAMVĀD, a Sanskrit word denoting dialogue, is an inter-disciplinary confluence of dance, music, storytelling and visual arts from three ‘earth’ cultures created and performed by three talented Canadian artists from South Asian, First Nations and African-Caribbean cultural backgrounds under the mentorship of three senior artists from those traditions: Lata Pada (Creative Director of SAMVĀD and Artistic Director of Sampradaya Dance Creations), Michael Greyeyes (Theatre Professor at York University, teaching movement to actors) and Charmaine Headley (Co-Artistic Director of COBA - Collective of Black Artists).

SAMVĀD explores themes of ‘identity’ and ‘voice,’ and how each performer negotiates and balances ‘tradition’ and ‘modernity.’

The performers are: Meena Murugesan, Nadine Jackson and Shelly Ann McLeod.
