SALVAGED: Cathy Barancik September 25, 2010

Cathy Barancik’s work imbues discarded, everyday objects with a sense of history. The work emphasizes the beauty of renewal, reusability, and rebirth in stark contrast to a culture that prizes disposability. More than a ten new “artifacts” from Barancik are on view in PHD’s Portfolio Gallery September 25 through November 6, 2010, with a free reception for the artist on Saturday, September 25 from 7-10PM.

“I am drawn to old tools and treasures and transform these objects into works of art with personal meaning. Many of my pieces deal with family issues, social inequality and political concerns. In addition to found objects I use pantyhose, clay, fiber and encaustic to create the textures and surfaces I am looking for. My work, as a result, is very tactile and multi-layered.”

Cathy Barancik is a graduate of Washington University School of Fine Arts. Her work has been exhibited by The Artists’ Guild of St. Louis and by Art Saint Louis where she received an award of excellence. She serves on the board of St. Louis Public Radio, KWMU and 50% of all proceeds from the sale of her work will be donated to The Friends of St. Louis Public Radio: KWMU, a 501-c-3.
