With a career spanning over 35 years, Salif Keita is regarded as one of World Music’s most influential artists and has recorded numerous albums with some the finest international musicians in jazz, rock and pop including the likes of Carlos Santana, Vernon Reid, Youssou N’Dour and Ray Lema. He is unique not only because of his reputation as the Golden Voice of Africa, but because he is an albino and a direct descendant of the founder of the Mali Empire, Sundiata Keita. Born in the city of Djoliba and shunned by the community because he was an albino (a sign of bad luck), he left the country to live in exile and in pursuit of his musical ambitions. Credited as one of the founders of the Afro-pop genre, the West African singer is known the world over for his unforgettable live performances, soaring vocals and his emotionally-fueled songs. Musical instruments that are commonly featured in Keita's work include balafons, djembes, guitars, koras, organs, saxophones, and synthesizers. His latest album, M'Bemba was released on June 20th.
