Morland's work is the subject of an exhibition now on view at VMFA. The countryside and rural life became a national obsession in 18th-century England, dominating art, literature, decorative arts and even tourism. Among the many artists to depict country life during that period, George Morland was perhaps the most sought-after, producing many thousands of images of rustic subjects and rivaling even the popularity and influence of the English master Thomas Gainsborough.
