+rupa and the april fishes+
in-store performance at amoeba records, sf !

2:00pm - Saturday, July 7th on Haight Street

If local singer Rupa were a movie, she would be Amélie meets Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown meets Latcho Drom meets Do the Right Thing. She'd be set in India and Berkeley...She would be (and, in fact, is) an instant cult classic among the smart, idealistic, international set. -- SF Weekly

Rupa & the April Fishes are Rupa [songwriter/guitar/vocals], Marcus Cohen [trumpet], Ed Baskerville [cello], Aaron Kierbel [contraptionist], Isabel Douglass [accordion] and Eliyahu Sills [upright bass]. They make music that mixes sounds from chansons Francais, tango, jazz, American folk with tones from Indian ragas. What is created is a living music and a lively performance, a sonic examination of living at the edge of so many cultures, with arrangements ranging from sparse and spacious to wildly danceable.

Rupa & the April Fishes are based in the lotus-eaters land of San Francisco. They have toured successfully in California, and Europe where they played to capacity crowds in Paris, southern France and Switzerland. In S.F., they have sold out the Independent and most recently played Slim’s with Aterciopelados, the Power to the Peaceful festival in Golden Gate Park with Michael Franti & Spearhead and opened for Susana Baca and Rodrigo y Gabriela. Rupa has played S.F. City Hall, the Fillmore, Cellspace, the Mission Cultural Center and her favorite spots...the Revolution Cafe and El Garage de la Folsom.
