Rukmavati Ki Haveli - Film (1991 / Col./ Hindi/ EST). Screenplay, cinematography, direction: Govind Nihalani. Cast: Ila Arun, Uttara Baokar, Jyoti Subhash Chandra, Kitu Gidwani, Pallavi Joshi, Sohaila Kapur-Limaye, Suneeta Sengupta. Original music by Ila Arun. Adapted from Spanish dramatist Federico Garcia Lorca's play, The House of Bernarda Alba (original Spanish title La Casa de Bernarda Alba), this film is the third in our series, Modern Vision, based on contemporary drama. Rukmavati is a matriarch, whose husband has just died, leaving behind five unmarried daughters. They are cloistered together in a house, with little room for fulfillment and a great deal of bitterness. The film was shot on 16mm and later blown up to 35mm. Rukmavati ki Haveli has a great number of cuts, which is the privilege of cinema, in the action-reaction shots of the women. The claustrophobic and eerie atmosphere of the film mirrors the theme, which is to do not just with physical claustrophobia, but that of the mind, caused by an oppressive social system. The action takes place in a single habitat, breaking the basic unities would have taken away from the theme. Only three colours black, maroon and off white -- are used, the compositions kept tight. Visually, the expression on the girls' faces becomes the landscape of the film. There is no background music. Govind Nihalani will be in conversation with Amrit Gangar. After the screening, there will be an interaction with the director and his original creative team of the film. A limited number of seats will be available for Members on a first-come-first-served basis.
