This January, 2013, the historic Actors Playhouse was unveiled as a new venue that harkens back to the cutting-edge music and theatre scene of Greenwich Village in the 1950’s. First opened in 1956, as part of the Off-Off Broadway scene that began in Greenwich Village as a reaction to Off-Broadway, the theatre became a favorite of locals including John Lennon, Jimi Hendrix, and Al Pacino.

In keeping with the space’s theatrical history, each evening will feature an eclectic mix of performances ranging from Cirque de Soleil contortionists, accordion artists, acrobats, violinists, and aliens. Anchored by the experiential curators who control the atmosphere through music, lights , instrumental accompaniments, and performers, the Actor’s Playhouse is a completely fresh concept in a sea of mundane New York nightlife.

Paramount to the project was preserving the historic spirit of the space and creating a functional design that incorporates the best lighting and sound while parlaying that nostalgic era. Designer Antonio Di Oronzo Bluarch and Historical Architect Juergen Wessely were brought in to fulfill this delicate and challenging task. Entering from the street level, guests will descend the original stairwell that opens into a room that transports them into another time. Warm lighting, curved walls, and luxe natural tones fill the room. Banquets line the rounded walls, creating an amphitheater effect around the center stage. A vast 40-foot bar inviting patrons to move about freely and socialize, adding to the energy of the room. The sheepskin ceilings are undeniably one of the major focuses of the theater’s design.
