Completely overturning Victorian sexual roles, the paintings and sonnets by Dante Gabriel Rossetti were perceived as sexually provocative. Friday evening Gilles Weyns will talk about his research at the State University of Ghent. He will give an impassioned lecture about the polarised society in which Rossetti's liberated and overtly sexually active women were experienced as an ?incarnate' social threat. Weyns will also recite several erotically charged passages from Rossetti's ballads and sonnets and engage in a dialogue with Edwin Becker, curator of the present Rossetti exhibition in the Van Gogh Museum.
