What is Rudy Faulkner’s “Calypso Jazz”?

Calypso music is a genre of Afro-Caribbean music originating throughout the Caribbean islands. It is heavily rooted in West African traditional music and was used as a form of communication as well as entertainment. The melding of Calypso music with Jazz, R&B, and romantic harmonies is embodied in the music of the late balladeer, JON LUCIEN (1942-2007). His name is still revered throughout the world for his earthy rich voice, sweetened by luscious lyrics and rich harmonies.

Richmond, VA’s own Calypsonian, Rudy Faulkner has taken up the baton and is leading a movement to keep Lucien’s music alive. Both vocalists have family ties and origins on the islands of Tortola and St. Thomas, in the Virgin Islands. Both have gorgeous voices which reach the very heart of the listener. Both share a passion for music that touches the soul. Rudy has received the blessings of Lucien’s wife who is encouraging him with this wonderful project. She has sent him Lucien’s sheet music, photos, memorial programs and other memorabilia to inspire him on his journey.

Richmond Jazz Society is proud to debut Rudy Faulkner’s tribute to the legendary troubadour Jon Lucien and the music of the Virgin Islands. Rudy will also introduce to Richmond some members of St. Thomas’ 21st Century Band, including internationally renowned Jazz pan player Victor Provost; Amin Gumbs, drums; and Reginald Cyntje, trombone. Area musicians round out the ensemble: Charlie & Lucy Kilpatrick, Baron Tymas, Carl Lester, and James “Saxsmo” Gates.
