Richmond Jazz Society Guest Educators Series presents Winard Harper September 14, 2010

Baltimore native Winard Harper is considered one of the most explosive young drummers on the Jazz scene today. He has performed and/or recorded with such legendary artists at Dexter Gordon, Johnny Griffin, Abdullah Ibrahim, Pharoah Sanders and others. But, it was his work with vocalist Betty Carter that honed him into a remarkable percussionist - as exciting to watch as he is to listen to.

Winard, with his brother Philip, created an awesome, hard-swinging sextet “The Harper Brothers Band”, whose recordings set the US and international charts and touring circuit ablaze! Acclaimed critic, Leonard Feather called them the most brilliant Jazz group of the new decade.

Harper continues to be one of the most sought-after young drummers in Jazz today. In addition to touring with his own band he performs and records with such renown artists as Joe Lovano, Wycliffe Gordon, Frank Wess and more. Audience members here are still talking about Winard’s May 2010 performance with legendary pianist Dr. Billy Taylor. He played a wonderfully sophisticated set with Dr. Taylor but when it was his turn to shine – he played all over that drum kit and nearly set the VA State Univ. auditorium on fire!
