Over the past 40 years, the MCA has distinguished itself with groundbreaking exhibitions and a growing collection that chronicle the evolving history of contemporary art. 'Rewind: 1970s to 1990s, Works from the MCA Collection' focuses on works from the MCA Collection by artists who came to prominence in the 1970s, 80s, and 90s and reassesses the individuals, themes, and developments that continue to influence a new generation of artists. 'Rewind' examines works by eleven significant artists from a contemporary vantage point to learn how this earlier work influences the art of today. The artists represented in the exhibition address a wide range of themes that reflect artistic and social concerns of their time, such as the construction of identity; the inequalities of a global economy; a critique of art making and its institutions; desire and the abject side of human nature; and approaches to early video and recent conceptual photography. 'Rewind' presents multiple works by each artist including Vito Acconci, Richard Artschwager, Matthew Barney, Alfredo Jaar, Mike Kelley, Sharon Lockhart, Richard Long, Richard Prince, Lorna Simpson, Tony Tasset, and Gillian Wearing.
