Return Journeys to Cuba February 13, 2008

Although originally considered a stopover on the way to the United States, Cuba became home to many Jewish immigrants in the 1920s–1950s. But when Fidel Castro rose to power, in 1959, the majority of the Cuban Jewish population left for America, leaving behind a rich heritage on their beloved island. In this illustrated talk, Cuban-born writers Ruth Behar and Rosa Lowinger examine the historical context of 1950s Cuba, Jewish life on the eve of the Cuban revolution, the revitalization of the Cuban Jewish community, including the involvement of American Jews and the bittersweet stories of Jews living in Cuba today. A book signing will follow the program.
