The Musical "The Resurrection Army"

The premiere for the musical ‘The Resurrection Army’ will be performed on the desert stage of Masada the 21st and 22nd of March 2010. The musical is a Danish initiative including Danish and international artists. The show will not be performed on just any stage but will be presented at the actual site of the historic event situated near the Dead Sea.

A passionate lovestory

The stage is set during the rebellion of the Jews against Rome as described by the Jewish historian of that time, Josephus Flavius, in his renowned writings: ‘The War of the Jews’, Vol.VII, 395-406. The exact period is the last days surrounding the dramatic moment when the 10th Roman Legion, after an exhausting three year siege, sent 8000 men up to the Masada fortress to attack the rebel eagle’s nest. The musical is centred around a gripping and passionate romance between the daughter of the fierce Roman general, Flavius Silva and the Jewish rebel leader, Eliezer whose people have taken the young Roman girl, Claudia captive.

The moving title song of the musical, ‘Don’t Urge Me to Leave’ is sung by Claudia when her lover pleads with her to return to safety before the 960 inhabitants take their lives so as not to, as Josephus Flavius writes, ‘fall as slaves into Roman hands’.

The Musical Idea

The plot of the musical is based on an old Hebrew scroll discovered near the synagogue of Masada in 1962 and which experts regard as the last farewell of the rebels. The scroll is a copy of the words spoken by the Jewish prophet, Ezekiel, regarding the ‘dead bones in the valley’ (chapter 37). In this writing he declares, ‘God shall breathe His breath into these slain, and they shall rise up and become a vast army: The Resurrection Army. Will this army bring war or peace?

All proceeds to Support Desert Peace

All proceeds from the show go to supprt the non profit organisation. The aim of Desert Peace is to provide an enviroment for youth to learn about other cultures, to overcome the different cultural or social barriers and, most important, become friends. Most of the youth that participate in the expeditions come from troubled backgrounds. The trips include challenging activities that have a positive influence on the youth's self esteem.

Desert Peace brings hope to young people and that is why the musical will support this non-political, non-religious organization.
