A groundbreaking victory for clean energy at Cal State is now just one Board vote away. Next Wednesday, the California State University Board of Trustees will vote on a groundbreaking Sustainable Energy and Buildings Policy that will set CSU as a national leader in the clean energy revolution. More than 14,000 students, faculty, staff, and allies have fought for this policy for nearly two years with petitions, phone calls, direct lobbying, media work, and negotiation. If we pass this policy, no university in the country can play the budget-crunch card in response to calls for a transition to energy independence.

If approved, the CSU Sustainable Energy and Buildings Policy will set goals for campuses that will nearly double the amount of renewable energy installed on campuses in the United States and will increase the amount of clean electricity powering campuses from the grid in the US by more than 20%. The CSU would become just the sixth university or system to require all new and renovated buildings to meet or exceed equivalent LEED green building standards. If energy conservation goals in the policy are met, the CSU could save as much as $50 million over the next five years in avoided energy costs. If approved, this policy will dramatically cut global warming pollution, reduce asthma and cancer rates in our cities, protect our natural environment, and help keep a California State University education affordable for generations of students to come.
