Market Street Gallery is pleased to present Reliquaries: Requiem for the Printed Word, an exhibition showcasing the latest works by Sandi Miot, illustrating the disappearance of books & newspapers into the digital world. The exhibit will open October 4, 2011, and run through October 29, 2011. The artist reception will be held on Saturday, October 8, 2011, from 6 PM - 8 PM.

Sandi Miot enjoys making order out of a group of objects, putting them into a painting or sculpture and making modern-day reliquaries of modern-day life. There is something compelling to her about the permanence and stability it implies. They become a philosophy of what's happening around her.

Books have always been very, very important to Sandi Miot. They have been a comfort and a refuge at times when that's exactly what she needed. Sandi believes we are witnessing today the disappearance of the printed page and that makes her very sad. She brought books into her artwork in the hopes of making them little relics of their own.

Sandi Miot feels that she gives these books a new visual life, since the books she uses in her paintings & sculptures are usually ones that have been rescued from the dumpster and were destined for the landfill. Otherwise she would never be able to tear them up into the bits and pieces that she uses. Growing up there was always such serious taboos on marking books and destroying books was unthinkable. As it is, many times Sandi starts to read a book she's rescued and is unable to use it at all.

The Folio Series is about the disappearance of books and newspapers into the digital world and the beauty of these commonplace objects shown in a different way.
