Refresh Boston meets again in June with designer and author Joshua Porter, who will present: Designing in a Recession

Times are not easy for web designers. Great projects are rare, clients are slower with payments, and project sizes are shrinking. Yes, indeed, the down economy has reached the Web and the professionals who work there.

In this talk Joshua Porter (http://bokardo.com) will share tips & hints on how can you stand out when most are falling down. He will talk about his own experiences getting bokardo.com off the ground as well as stories about those who have both had great success and suffered more than they should. You'll learn tips like how to network even if you're shy and how to design a solid portfolio. You'll come away with real-world tactics to get more design work in these trying times.

The meeting space and drinks are provided by Microsoft Startup Labs, and food for attendees will be provided once again thanks to help from sponsors. We're also raffling off a few copies of his book, Designing for the Social Web, thanks to a generous donation by Peachpit Press.

This month's sponsors include:

::play:: is a media & technology studio focused on simple, measurable solutions that drive business.

Slim Kiwi is a small design and development firm with high standards, always on the lookout for additions to its roster of great clients and freelancers.

What should I talk about? Any burning topics you all want to hear about?

ValeskaOleary

How about Social Search?

ericdfields

The psychology stuff at #aneventapart today was great, but I'd like to hear something new if I show up!

bokardo

@ericdfields - Yes, I'll be talking about something new. (designing for virality)

jeckman

Dang it! Wish I could be there but I'm out of town

Hi Folks...change of plans. I'm not going to be talking about Designing for Virality anymore. I was at the recent An Event Apart and I kept hearing about a more interesting, timely topic: Designing in a Recession.

So I'm going to be talking about how to get and keep business when times are slow, as they are now. I'll be sharing tactics for improving your portfolio, your networking, and your general marketing strategy. I'll try and make it applicable to both freelancers and agencies/orgs alike.

I'm excited about this new topic...I hope you are too!

JasonRobb

I am excited for this new topic. Definitely relevant to my situation. See you tonight!

Joshua ... fantastic talk tonight + a lot of great advice that could apply to both independent design professionals and those working with 'internal clients' ... if you know what i mean ...

sorry I couldn't hang for some Cambridge Brew action, hopefully next time ... or maybe out at one of the North Shore Geeks events ...

Thanks again.
