Our first speaker of 2010 is User Experience Consultant Matthew Oliphant, who gave a talk on Usability Testing at our February 2009 event. Matthew returns with a follow-up on User Experience entitled:

Embiggen Your Knowledge: How Cromulent Design Would Make The Simpsons Less Funny

The Simpsons has been on TV for 20 years, longer than many of us have been in the User Experience field, and they have been continuously ahead of their time as it relates to UX, by way of poking fun of it by doing things oh-so-wrong. Discover the lessons that The Simspons have taught us about the dangers of bad design, bad UX methods, and why you shouldn't stand in the way of a t-shirt cannon.

And yes, we will watch clips from the show! For educational purposes only! Not entertainment! Patent-pending!

There will be light snacks pizza provided for attendees, and we'd like to thank to our regular sponsor, Boston Web Studio, which specializes in designing and developing attractive, modern, accessible websites. Check them out at:

Morgan Kaufmann Publishers will be bringing some free books to give away to attendees as well. Refresh Boston members can save 30% off any of the titles in its UX/HCI catalog, using discount code REFRESH.

If anybody from the Salem, Beverly, Danvers, Peabody area is driving to this, HOOK ME UP and shoot me a note at marcamos at gmail dot com. Otherwise, I'll be on the train like some sort of yuppie-commuter. Which is fine. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Matthew Oliphant

The more serious subtitle to this talk is "Working With Users."

Just in case anyone thinks they won't really be learning anything. :)

marcamos

Scratch that 'need a ride' comment above; I'll already be in Boston CRUSHING HATERS.

Anyone interested in grabbing a snack/drink beforehand? Maybe at Cosi in Kendall Square? We'll have food at the event, but I don't always get to eat much of it.

Matthew Oliphant

I'll probably be at Cosi around 5:15.

Figure it will be a good time to start on my slides.

mbloomstein

I'm down with Cosi. Is 5:15 too early to start prank calling Leombruno with great reasons to periodically leave the great state of New Hampshire?

Matthew: You're dead to me.

Margot: It's never too early to tease Jeff about not making it to the actual meeting. Never.

Matthew Oliphant

Oh... This Thursday? Crap.

:P

Now I have to figure out how to get from State St. to (is it Kendal Sq.?)... there's probably a series of internet documents that makes this possible.

notasausage

Marc: There's this thing called Google Maps for the iPhone...

Honestly, you should probably just walk down to Park Street and take the Red Line to Kendall Square. Otherwise you'll have to go from State Street to Downtown Crossing on the Orange Line and then transfer to the Red Line to go 1 stop. State Street is close enough for a brisk walk.

I may not make it to Cosi to join you, fighting a migraine right now and hoping to rest before Refresh tonight. I'll see you at the NERD Center though!

mescutia

I'll be a bit late to the talk as I'm attending a holiday party being put on by one of the staffing agencies I work through. But I'll be there!

does anyone know if this event is being recorded/streamed?
