Fivepoints Arthouse is excited to announce the opening of Reflection Seen, a group exhibition of paintings and works on paper by Manuel Angeja, Kelly Correll Brown, Jamie Nelson, and James Seevers. Reflection Seen will be on exhibition at Fivepoints Arthouse from September 3 through September 30, 2011. An opening reception for the artists will be held on Saturday, September 3 from 7-10pm. Additionally, a closing reception will be held on Friday, September 30 from 7-10pm.

Reflection Seen presents four artists who rigorously examine difficult questions regarding perception. This group of paintings and drawings seek to address the relationship between foundations of perception and that which is perceived. A relevant metaphor is human sight. Light hits the retina and is converted to electrical signals. These signals are translated by the brain, into our perception of the world around us, with all of the associations and meanings we assign to certain places and objects. Through sight, small, fundamental pieces of information are built into a larger concept, capable of holding within it any meaning, from the most mundane to the deepest, most existential.

Manuel Angeja's paintings focus on marks and the suggestions these marks can allude to. Sometimes referencing the landscape, sometimes abstract, his paintings build large ideas out of smaller pieces.

Kelly Correll Brown's work, centered around marks produced through her process, suggests fundamental ideas and symbols that have added up to become her perceived reality and who she is today.

Jamie Nelson's work twists fluorescent color and abstract shapes that tug at the associations we have accumulated throughout life, dealing with the fringes of our perceptions.

James Seevers’ paintings may reference physics, mathematics, the human brain, or a kind of universal spirituality in order to make visible those things we know are there, but cannot see.

All four artists live, work and have exhibited extensively in the East Bay, Oakland, and San Francisco.

A live sound installation will be created and performed at the opening reception by Skot B, an Oakland based musician and producer.

At the closing reception, The Ether Staircase will create an evocative and meditative sound installation.
