Reducing home energy costs November 29, 2005

Cold weather has finally arrived, and energy analysts warn that home heating bills may be 40% to 70% higher this winter than last. To learn how to keep costs manageable, and share ideas, plan to attend a meeting to explore home energy efficiency and renewable energy options. The meeting will begin at 7:00 p.m. in the second-floor conference room at 402 Washington St. on Tuesday, November 29, and is free and open to the public.

The meeting, hosted by RENew Northfield, will begin with a brief presentation on how to understand and analyze your home energy bills, and the incentives (tax credits, rebates, etc.) available for home-scale energy efficiency and renewable energy measures. A discussion of energy-saving strategies and technologies will follow, and the meeting will conclude with an examination of home-scale renewable energy options, including solar thermal, photovoltaic, small wind systems, geothermal heating and cooling systems, and wood, pellet and corn stoves.

Learning groups based on particular technologies may be formed as a result of the meeting. Reduced costs for various technologies via group buys may also be a possibility.
