Energy efficiency has a key role to play in combating climate change, but at the same time it can make an important contribution to recovery from the economic crisis. The lecture will focus both on the Obama Administration’s vision of a new clean energy economy and the emergence of energy efficiency as an ever hotter topic on the global scale. The following topics will be discussed in the talk:




  • The Obama Administration’s vision of a post-economic-crisis new clean energy economy

  • Divided responsibility: impact on US climate commitments

  • The UNFCCC process: developed and developing world perspectives

  • Many nations improving energy efficiency, scale of modest compared to the problem and opportunity

  • Emerging business models to enable companies to profit from widespread deployment of energy efficiency

  • Provisions in the economic stimulus package

  • New energy and climate legislation pending on Capitol Hill


Mark Hopkins is an internationally recognized expert on energy efficiency with 35 years of experience in policy and program development. He currently directs the UN Foundation’s energy policy program to incorporate strong energy efficiency commitments in international agreements. He also works to develop the capacity of UN agencies to deploy clean energy.
