Southern Expressions: Works from the Mississippi Museum of Art

Opens at MGCCC, Jefferson Davis Campus Art Gallery
January 25 – February 26, 2010

Contemporary art is not limited to the galleries in Chelsea. A new exhibition on loan from the Mississippi Museum of Art, Jackson, surveys photographs, drawings and paintings created by over a dozen Mississippi artists over the past 40 years. The exhibition opens at its first venue, Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College, Jefferson Davis Campus Art Gallery, on January 25. In conjunction with the exhibition, an opening reception takes place at the gallery on Thursday, February 4, at 12:30 p.m. – 2:00 p.m. This exhibition and reception are sponsored by Mississippi Public Broadcasting (MPB).

The artists featured in the exhibition were showcased by MPB for the television series, "Southern Expressions." The list of exhibiting artists includes Marshall Bouldin, Jane Rule Burdine, William Dunlap, Glennray Tutor, Bebe Wolfe, and Wyatt Waters, all of whom have work in the Mississippi Museum of Art's permanent collection. Episodes of "Southern Expressions" will be available for viewing in the gallery.

Included are early examples of the artists' work that were acquired by the Museum in the 1960s through 2008. “'Southern Expressions'

complements the MPB series, which features artists at work in their studios, by presenting some of their earlier works," said Beth Batton, Curator of the Collection and Public Programs at the Mississippi Museum of Art. "This gives a more complete understanding of where the artwork came from and where it is going.”

Southern Expressions: Works from the Mississippi Museum of Art is organized by the Mississippi Museum of Art and supported with funds provided by the Museum's statewide Traveling Exhibition Endowment, a fund made possible through significant private contributions matched by the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency, with additional funding provided by the Mississippi Arts Commission's Arts Reinvestment Initiative.
