What are RSS-feeds? What is this all about?

From Wikipedia:

"RSS is a family of Web feed formats used to publish frequently updated content such as blog entries, news headlines, and podcasts in a standardized format. An RSS document (which is called a "feed", "web feed", or "channel") contains either a summary of content from an associated web site or the full text. RSS makes it possible for people to keep up with web sites in an automated manner that can be piped into special programs or filtered displays."

From the Dictionary for Plain Language for Communicators:

"RSS is the tool that will allow you to automatically distribute your content (press releases, audio-files, video-files, fact sheets, updates) online to a multitude of platforms and in different formats.

At the same time, understanding RSS allows for real time online monitor of a multitude of sources - think blogs, websites, news-sites, forums...) on what is being said about your company, product and services.
