Poetry is a common language all over the world but it has taken awhile in the evolution of English poetry for the great, unknown non-European voices to be translated and published. This has brought new ways of seeing and things seendeserts instead of daffodils, onion-domes instead of spires. The impact has been immediate and intense, enriching and revitalizing the Western poetic tradition. This course will introduce many of the most important and interesting of these masters from Russia, the Orient (Turkey and North Africa), Eastern Europe, South America and Asia. The course will also introduce the process and complexities of translation. Participants will have an opportunity to attempt simple translations themselves during weekly workshops. Besides giving great pleasure and reading wonderful poems, the course will aim to develop the participants understanding of genre and their critical abilities in all areas of reading and writing.
