Poetry is a common language all over the world and one of the earliest art forms, having its roots in dance and music. Poetry is not only for the intellectual elite but in many countries is an important form of media and communication. This course aims to unlock the mystique and dispel the perceived difficulty of reading poems by providing some basic tools and literary terms. Besides giving great pleasure and introducing participants to some wonderful poems, the course will aim to develop their understanding of genre and critical abilities in all areas of reading. It will also, in an indirect way, unravel the intricacies of grammar and show the way writing works. Each session will include some lecture and, although not a writing workshop, plenty of discussion and hands-on activities for those aspiring to write their own verse.
