Crook town, run down, shabby town, gambling town, Bay City. Chandler gravitated to sin and debauch, so Santa Monica in the 1930s was a frequent stop on Philip Marlowe's weekly travails. From doctor feelgoods to second wives with pasts and bodies oozing blood in the shower stall, this tour has it all. The canonization of sin, wealth, and sunshine on the Westside by Chandler established the hard-boiled genre in American Letters.

Focusing on Chandler’s middle period, “Farewell My Lovely”, “Lady in the Lake”, and a few short stories upon which these novels are built—”Bay City Blues” for one, this tour will look at Chandler’s life on the Westside, the real life rackets and murders which gave Bay City its name, and the undeniable fact that you can’t eat the sunshine.
