Maitri Arts and Culture Society joins hands with the all-pervading Pierrot’s Troupe to bring out an insightful & topical play - RAJA NAHAR SINGH.

The play focuses on the Martyrdom of Raja Nahar Singh of Ballabh Garh -Haryana (1823-1858) in India’s First War of Independence in 1857. It, thus, intends to re-live the life and sacrifice of Raja Nagar Singh -- one of the main yet forgotten heroes of our first Freedom Struggle. It coincides with the 187th Birth Anniversary of Raja Nahar Singh on April 6, 2010.

It unfolds in the backdrop of Raja Nahar Singh’s Trial by the ‘European Military Commission’ soon after the failure of the revolt of 1857. Based on historical facts and figures, the play goes on to prove that the trial was not only an attempt to get rid of a potential enemy, but it was also a British conspiracy to paint the Raja, for the progeny, as an inconsequential and insignificant player in the Indian struggle for freedom.

The play features Tom Alter, who Pierrot’s Troupe has in the past introduced in as exceptional roles as Maulana Azad and Ghalib etc. This time around, he comes across as what he is the most famous for – the Gora Villain. Also, he will be playing a villain for the first time in his theatre career, spanning over 20 plays and 40 years. It will be performed by Pierrot’s Troupe who undoubtedly are the purveyor of “Original Plays” and “Bio-Dramas” in India. It, then, is slated to be an exciting affair.
