Prefontaine Memorial 10K Run September 15, 2007

Those special qualities that made Steve Prefontaine a hero to track fans more than two decades ago are still creating new admirers. Many who were not born when Pre was setting records, or ever saw him compete, are inspired by his enduring example of courage, feisty determination, and charisma.

Runners can see where it all began this September at the Prefontaine Memorial Run.

Now in its 28th year, the popular run got its start when a group of Coos Bay citizens decided it was time that Steve Prefontaine's hometown did something to honor its favorite son. A commemorative monument was placed adjacent to the Bay Area Chamber of Commerce, displaying a bronze likeness of Pre and a list of all his American records held at the time of his death in May 1975. Nearby, at the Coos Art Museum, the Prefontaine Memorial Gallery holds the permanent collection of Steve's awards and memorabilia, as well as numerous photographs highlighting his illustrious running career.

The Prefontaine Memorial Run has established the reputation of being a well-organized race catering to the needs of the runner. It is the showpiece of the Bay Area Fun Festival, a two-day community celebration offering events for the entire family.

Come join us on September 15th, 2007 for the 28th Annual Prefontaine Memorial Run--and stay for the entire weekend. You'll enjoy all that the South Coast has to offer.

DATE/START TIME: Saturday, September 15, 2007. 10:00 A.M. at the corner of Fourth and Anderson in downtown Coos Bay. Wheel chair runners will start at 9:50 A.M.

FUN WALK: In conjunction with the 10K (6.2 Mile) run, a fun walk will also be held. Walkers have their choice of walking the entire 10K route or the shorter 2-mile course. The walkers will start at the rear of the starting pack and follow the same course until reaching the corner of 10th and Central, where the 2-mile walkers take a left turn toward the stadium (see course map). No times will be provided for the 2-mile fun walk. Race timing devices will be turned off after 11:45 A.M. so we can produce timely and accurate results. Walkers finishing after 11:45 A.M. will not receive official times.

ENTRY FEE: $18.00 (non-refundable and non-transferable) $21.00 after September 11, 2007.

REGISTRATION: Applications may be submitted online or mailed to Pre Memorial Run, P.O. Box 1380, Coos Bay, Oregon 97420. They will also be accepted at the Bay Area Chamber of Commerce office through September 10, 2007. On September 14th and 15th registration will be held at the St. Monica Catholic Church Parish Hall, 357 S. 6th Street, Coos Bay. Hours at St. Monica are 3:00 to 6:00 P.M. on Friday and 8:00 to 9:30 A.M. on race day.
