Many American artists in the 1940s were influenced in the direction of abstract art by the example of European modernist trends, especially the flat, fragmented forms of Cubism, the geometric compositions of Non-Objective Art and the subconscious, creative processes of Surrealism. These esthetic influences were brought to America by an influx of artist immigrants escaping the political turmoil of Western Europe prior to and during World War II.
